Categorize:The Culture of Buddhist Columbaria Date:2025-09-22 Browse:4

The term “Buddha Columbarium” originates from Buddhist culture and is also referred to as a “Meritorious Seat” or “Lotus Seat.” Being close to the Buddha, it offers divine protection and blessings to the donor, as well as to their descendants. The concept of the Buddha Columbarium emerged from the cycle of life and death, giving rise to traditional prayer culture.

Prayer culture has deep roots in China, with detailed accounts found in ancient texts such as the Book of Documents·Hong Fan.

A Buddha Columbarium symbolizes the pursuit of five blessings: longevity, wealth, health, virtue, and a peaceful passing. Since the last blessing represents “a peaceful end,” those who pray for these blessings believe that being laid to rest in such a sacred place will extend blessings to their descendants.

The Buddha Columbarium upholds China’s traditional burial practice of “resting in peace underground, honored in the palace,” eliminating concerns about exposure to the elements. It also embodies the philosophical principles of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, emphasizing harmony between nature and humanity. In promoting Buddhist culture, it also carries forward China’s millennia-old tradition of filial piety.高端设计图片 (13)

A Buddha Columbarium can serve as a resting place for ancestral tablets, a storage space for cherished personal items, or a site for enshrining statues of deities or Buddhas. When a loved one passes away, their ashes can ultimately be laid to rest there.

Donating a Buddha Columbarium signifies “entering the palace with honor.” The columbarium is illuminated 24/7 by eternal lights, providing a clean, serene, and warm environment where the departed can rest under the guidance of Buddhist teachings, surrounded by divine light and protection.A地宫福位 (64)

On major Buddhist festivals and the first and fifteenth days of each lunar month temple monks chant sutras and offer prayers for those who have acquired a Buddha Columbarium. Additionally, during the Qingming Festival, the Hungry Ghost Festival, and the Winter Solstice, the temple hosts large-scale memorial ceremonies free of charge, guiding the departed to the Western Pure Land and offering solace to their souls. This allows descendants to pay their respects eternally.

Those fortunate enough to donate a Buddha Columbarium at the temple will receive the blessings of the Buddha, ensuring prosperity for generations to come.
