Inspired by Borges' vision of a heavenly library, this innovative columbarium design reimagines a memorial space into a serene sanctuary for remembrance. The project introduces the world’s first “library niche” system within the Columbarium, where each niche resembles a book on a shelf, safeguarding ashes and personal memories. These customized Columbarium units are both structurally durable and personalized, allowing families to inscribe each “book spine” with unique stories. Beyond its functional role, the space offers lounge areas for quiet reflection, transforming visits into meaningful cultural experiences. This Columbarium design blends humanistic care with aesthetic beauty, turning farewell into a dignified dialogue with memory and soul.

“If there truly is a heaven, it must resemble a library.” — This poignant reflection by the Argentine poet and librarian Borges not only captures the imagination of a sanctuary for knowledge but also offers profound inspiration for rethinking spaces dedicated to commemorating life. Drawing from this vision, we present an innovative columbarium design inspired by the concept of a “Heavenly Library,” transforming farewell and remembrance into a warm, serene, and culturally rich experience.天仙设计图 (96)

Informed by advanced practices such as those at Beijing Huairou Jiugongshan Great Wall Memorial Forest, this project reimagines the traditional memorial hall as a spiritual sanctuary that blends humanistic care with aesthetic excellence. Nestled within a tranquil natural setting, the space embraces the traditional layout of “central axis facing north, embraced by the Great Wall,” integrating architecture and landscape to create an atmosphere of peace and solemnity. A specially customized high-capacity Columbarium system ensures functional efficiency while harmonizing with the overall aesthetic language.天仙设计图 (99)

Upon entering, visitors are greeted not by a conventional memorial environment, but by the inviting ambiance of a spacious, home-like study. The world’s first “library niche” system is introduced here: each set of ash urn shelves is designed to resemble a bookshelf, with individual niches taking the form of books, their spines facing outward and neatly arranged along the walls. Each “book” not only safeguards the ashes of the departed but also treasures their biography, photographs, manuscripts, keepsakes, and even personal belongings such as a watch, letters, or a CD.

These customized Columbarium units are not only structurally robust and made of durable materials but also offer excellent sealing and personalized exterior options. Families can customize the text and color of each “spine” to reflect the life story of the deceased, turning every niche into a unique narrative of life.天仙设计图 (97)

The hall features several family lounge-style resting areas, equipped with comfortable sofas, coffee tables, and audiovisual facilities. Here, families can gather, respectfully retrieve a memento from the Columbarium, play a recording of a loved one’s voice, or read aloud from their favorite book, engaging in quiet reflection and dialogue. Our aim is to make each visit not merely an occasion of sorrow, but a cultural experience—a dance with memory and a conversation with the soul.天仙设计图 (99)

“Heaven is not an illusion; where the soul rests, there is heaven.”
This is more than a place to lay physical remains to rest; it is a civilized space where spirits are preserved and stories are perpetuated through the Columbarium system. With books as vessels and memories as chapters, we allow remembrance to flourish through reading and listening, guiding farewell out of shadow and into peace and dignity.
