The term “Buddha Columbarium” originates from Buddhist culture and may also be referred to as a “Meritorious Seat” or “Lotus Seat.” Being placed near the Buddha, it offers spiritual protection and blessings to the donor, as well as to their descendants. The concept of the Buddha Columbarium emerged from the cycle of life and death, giving rise to a traditional culture of seeking blessings.

Blessing-seeking culture has a long history in China, with detailed accounts found in ancient texts such as the Book of Documents·Hong Fan.

A Buddha Columbarium serves as a foundation for praying for the Five Blessings: longevity, wealth, health, virtue, and a peaceful passing. Since the last blessing is “a peaceful end,” those who seek blessings believe that being laid to rest in such a sacred place will extend blessings to their descendants.

The Buddha Columbarium upholds the traditional Chinese belief of “entering the earth for peace, entering the palace for honor,” providing a resting place sheltered from the elements. It also aligns with the philosophical principles of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, emphasizing harmony between nature and humanity. In promoting Buddhist culture, it also preserves China’s millennia-old tradition of filial piety.

A Buddha Columbarium can usually hold the memorial tablets of ancestors, personal treasured items, or statues of deities and Buddhas. When a loved one passes away, their remains can eventually be placed there for eternal reverence.

Donating a Buddha Columbarium signifies “entering the palace for honor.” The columbarium is illuminated 24 hours a day with eternal lights, providing a clean, warm, and serene environment. The departed rest in a hall filled with Buddhist teachings, under the constant glow of Buddha’s light, surrounded by sacred chants and divine protection.

On major Buddhist festivals and on the first and fifteenth days of each lunar month, monks at the temple chant sutras and offer blessings for those who have acquired a Buddha Columbarium. Additionally, during the Qingming Festival, the Zhongyuan Festival, and the Winter Solstice, the temple holds large-scale memorial ceremonies free of charge. These rituals guide the departed to the Western Pure Land, offering solace to their souls and providing a permanent place for descendants to pay their respects and cherish their memory for generations to come.
